Hard enamel is the premium version of the same idea. We fill the enamel to the brim of each metal cavity and then polish the whole face flat, so the pin comes out smooth and glossy — closer to jewellery than to a badge. Colours read deeper and the surface resists scratching.

Hard enamel pins, also known as cloisonné pins, have a jewellery-quality finish. They are die-struck, overfilled with coloured enamel and then polished flush, so the whole face comes out smooth and glossy. Unlike soft enamel pins, there is no texture to feel. They suit collars, lapels and backpacks, and you can switch the clutch for a magnet in the cart when a pin post will not work.
One thing worth knowing: every colour on a hard enamel pin needs a thin metal wall around it, so very fine detail is harder to hold. If your design is intricate, soft enamel handles it better, and if it is a photo or a gradient, order printed epoxy dome pins instead.
