What are soft enamel pins?

What is a clear epoxy coating on an enamel pin?

A clear epoxy coating, often called an epoxy dome, is a transparent resin layer applied over the front of a finished pin. After curing, it creates a smooth, glossy barrier over the design. It is an optional finishing step for soft enamel pins and is also used on many printed pin constructions.

Epoxy coating and soft enamel are independent decisions. Soft enamel creates the metal-and-color structure; epoxy changes the final surface above it. Adding epoxy does not convert a soft enamel pin into a hard enamel pin.

Epoxy is scratch-resistant, not scratch-proof. The coating can protect the color beneath it, but the resin surface can still pick up scuffs. Clear epoxy may also gradually yellow, haze, or lose gloss depending on its formulation and exposure to UV light, heat, chemicals, and abrasion.

What an epoxy dome does not guarantee

Marketing descriptions often turn an optional coating into a promise of complete protection. That is not technically accurate. An epoxy dome covers the front face; it does not necessarily seal every part of the product.

  • It does not waterproof the entire pin. The back, edges, post, clutch, and some plating surfaces may remain exposed.
  • It does not make all metal corrosion-proof. Storage, moisture, chemicals, plating quality, and base material still matter.
