Keychain Size Guide: How Big Should a Custom Keychain Be?
The most popular custom keychain size is 1.75 to 2 inches, measured across the longest side. That is big enough for a logo and a short line of text to read clearly, and small enough to sit comfortably on a set of keys. Go down to 1–1.5 inches for bag charms and simple icons, and up to 2.5–3 inches for detailed artwork, text-heavy designs or a keychain that should feel substantial. Custom keychains come in nine sizes from 1 to 3 inches.

How keychain size is measured
When you pick a keychain size, you are choosing the longest dimension of your design, not including the ring or clasp. If your design is taller than it is wide, a 2-inch keychain will be 2 inches tall; if your logo is wide, it will be 2 inches across and shorter in height. The other side scales in proportion to your artwork.
For a quick reference you can hold in your hand: a U.S. quarter is just under 1 inch across, and a standard credit card is about 3.4 inches wide. Most house keys are around 2 to 2.5 inches long, so a keychain in that range hangs about level with your keys.
Keychain size chart in inches and mm
| Size | In millimeters | Works well for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1" – 1.25" | 25–32 mm | Bag and zipper charms, simple icons, a single initial | Text beyond one or two short words |
| 1.5" | 38 mm | Simple logos, small mascots, budget giveaways | Fine detail and second lines of text |
| 1.75" – 2" | 44–51 mm | Most logos, characters and event keychains; the standard size | Very long names or taglines |
| 2.25" – 2.5" | 57–64 mm | Detailed illustrations, logos with a line of text, bottle openers | Weight on metal keychains adds up on a key ring |
| 2.75" – 3" | 70–76 mm | Text-heavy designs, luggage tags, statement or display pieces | Bulk in a pocket; better on bags than on car keys |
Size by keychain type
Metal keychains
Metal gets heavier as it gets bigger, and you will notice that weight on your car keys. 1.5 to 2 inches is the sweet spot for everyday use. Go to 2.5 inches or more if the keychain is a gift or has a bottle opener, where a bit of heft feels right. For enamel keychains, each color needs its own area inside a metal outline, so detailed designs need more size to keep those areas from getting too small. Options on the custom metal keychain page.
Acrylic keychains
Acrylic is light, so your choice of size is mostly about how your artwork reads. Around 2 inches is the usual size for illustrated keychains sold at conventions; 2.5 to 3 inches suits full scenes or characters with lots of detail. Because acrylic is printed, small text stays sharper than on metal or PVC at the same size. See custom acrylic keychains.
PVC keychains
PVC is molded in color layers, so if your design uses bold shapes and a few colors, it will look its best. 2 to 2.5 inches gives each color area enough room to mold cleanly, especially for mascots and characters. See custom rubber and PVC keychains.
Text size: the part that decides most size choices
If your design includes words, your text usually sets the minimum size. As a working guide used across the industry:
- Enamel metal and PVC: keep letters at least about 1.5–2 mm tall and avoid very thin fonts. Each letter has to be formed by metal lines or molded color.
- Acrylic: printed text can go a little smaller and stay readable, but anything you want people to read at arm's length still needs room.
- Long names or taglines: either size up or move the text to the back of the keychain.

Don't forget the attachment length
The ring or clasp you choose adds to the total length that hangs from your keys or bag. Custom keychains offer ten attachments; these four show the range:
Does size change the price?
Yes, but probably less than you expect. Going up a size or two usually adds only a modest amount per piece, while quantity has a much bigger effect. The product page shows the price for every size and quantity as you select, so the easiest way to decide is to compare two sizes side by side before you order.
Before you pick a size
- Printed your design at 1.5", 2" and 2.5" on paper and held it next to your keys
- Checked the smallest text is still readable at the size you chose
- Thought about weight, if you are ordering metal
- Picked an attachment that suits where it will hang: keys, bag or lanyard
- Compared the price of two sizes on the product page
Frequently asked questions
What is the standard keychain size?
Around 1.75 to 2 inches across the longest side. It fits most logos with a short line of text and sits comfortably on a set of keys.
Is a 2-inch keychain too big?
No. 2 inches is one of the most common sizes and hangs about level with a house key. It only starts to feel bulky in metal at 2.5 inches and up.
What size keychain do artists sell at conventions?
Acrylic keychains around 2 inches are the most common for convention tables. Larger 2.5 to 3 inch pieces work for detailed scenes or premium designs.
How big is a keychain hole?
Most keychain holes are about 2 to 4 mm across (roughly 0.08 to 0.16 inches). Metal keychains usually have a small hole in a cast tab, acrylic keychains are typically drilled or laser cut at around 3 to 4 mm, and PVC keychains use a molded hole or a metal eyelet. As a rule of thumb, the hole should be about 1 mm wider than the wire of the ring that goes through it, and sit 2 to 3 mm in from the edge so it does not crack or tear. Planning to use your own ring or a lanyard? Mention its wire thickness when you upload your artwork.
Does the size include the key ring?
No. The size is the longest side of the design itself. The attachment, from a 30 mm split ring to a 120 mm ball chain, adds to the hanging length.
Can I see the size before ordering?
Yes. Your free digital proof shows the design at its real dimensions, and you can change the size before approving it.
Choosing a material as well? Types of keychains compares metal, acrylic and PVC, and custom keychain design ideas shows shapes that make the most of each size. Two cases have their own size rules: bottle opener keychains, where the notch takes up space, and car keychains, which sit next to a key fob. Ordering for a team or a class? Sports, school and graduation keychains covers the sizes that suit each.
